Does your dog have thunderstorm, fireworks, or other loud noise anxiety? Does your dog cower when he hears thunder or run to the basement or behind the toilet? Does she plaster herself to your side and tremble on July 4? These are all signs of anxiety (noise aversion) and are not pleasant for either your dog or you. In the past I have prescribed various anti-anxiety medications for noise anxiety, but they didn't always work very well and had to be given at least an hour before the expected noise. Not an easy thing to do for thunderstorms! There are two products on our shelves that are showing great promise in calming the noise-anxious dogs.
SILEO is a new product from Zoetis specifically made for dogs with noise phobias. It is a gel applied directly to the dog's gums and lasts for at least 2 hours. It can be applied when you first notice your dog reacting to the noise--you don't have to try and get it on an hour before. Sileo is a low dose of dexmeditomidine, which we often use as a reversible sedative in the hospital. The dose provided by Sileo calms the dog without the sedation, so your dog will still be able to engage normally with the family. It can be redosed after 2 hours, if the noise continues. It is a prescription medication and not for dogs with heart, respiratory, liver, or kidney disease, so please talk to your veterinarian to see if Sileo is a good choice for your dog!
Composure Pro Chews by VetriScience are another calming product for both dogs and cats. These chews contain L-theanine and a Colostrum Calming Complex, both natural ingredients that help with anxiety of any type, including noise aversion. If your pet has separation anxiety or gets scared when people come to visit, it is worth trying these chews before asking about other anti-anxiety medications. They are also helpful for elderly dogs that aren't sleeping well or having cognitive decline (ie. senility issues). Composure Pro Chews can be given as needed - they don't need to be given daily.
Another new product from VetriScience is Vetri Repel Spray and wipes. This spray is a natural flea and tick repellent that composed of Brazilian oils derived from certified forests. The oils are used by the indigenous people of the Amazon forest to keep pests from detecting a desirable scent on their skin, thus creating avoidance. The oils are like your pets own force-field! Vetri Repel Spray is safe for use on beddings and could be applied to collars that are able to soak up the oils. The wipes are perfect for carrying on a hiking trip and can be applied to both you and your pet! After application, the effects last about 3 days.
For those dogs with allergies from fleas, pollens, weeds, etc, we have plenty of Apoquel in stock now. While we have had it for the past year, it has been in very short supply, so it was only prescribed to severely allergic dogs. But now I can prescribe it to dogs affected by seasonal allergies. If your dog is scratching a lot, licking his paws, shaking his ears or otherwise miserable, please call for an appointment to see if Apoquel is right for him!
If your dog just suffers from periodic ear infections (often caused by allergies), we also have CLARO from Bayer. This is the only FDA-approved, veterinarian-administered, single-dose treatment for external ear infections in dogs. If your dog has an ear infection, we will make sure it is due to yeast, clean the ear, then instill the CLARO. It is a clear gel that contains a long-acting steroid to help with pain and inflammation, an antifungal to kill the yeast (Malassezia) and an antibiotic for Staphylococcus pseudointermedius (generally the cause of skin infections in the dog). The best part? It only requires one application and you don't have to clean, flush, or otherwise medicate the ear at home!
Dental disease is much more common than anxiety or allergies in our dogs. Plaque forms when bacteria attach to teeth, and over time, this plaque hardens to form tartar. The accumulation of plaque and calculus can lead to not just bad breath, but eventually dental disease. Oravet Chews from Merial don't just clean teeth and freshen breath. Each chew contains delmopinol, an ingredient in human dental rinses that creates a barrier to help protect against plaque, calculus, and bad breath.
